There are a few important details to know before showing up to your first lesson or initial consultation. Take a peak at the FAQs below to make sure we are all able to put our best paw forward, right from the start! You can reach us at info@letstalkdogtraining.com if you have any other questions.
Gear could be a: Flat collar, harness, gentle leader, martingale collar, 4ft leash, 10ft leash, retractable leash, E-Collar, muzzle, prong collar, etc.
Bring your dog in what ever tool(s) you currently use to walk them in. We want to observe any potential hiccups in your current training approach. That will give us the best idea on how to move forward to find your best success!
*If you walk your dog on a retractable leash, make sure to also bring a standard 6ft leash. Having poop bags or poop bag holders attached to your dog's leash can be distracting so we encourage keeping those attached to your person or treat pouch!
Be comfortable! Dress for the weather by bringing layers when cold, applying sunscreen when it's hot, and always have your emotional support water bottle!
Handler items to have for your first lesson:
-Treats: 1 treat is equal to the size of a pea. Bring treats your dog gets excited about whether it be cat food, carrots, hotdogs, or string cheese. Have enough to get you through an hour training session. When in doubt, bring the whole bag!
-A Treat pouch: Will save you valuable time scrambling for a treat when your dog does what it should. Believe it or not, timing is a main factor in the communication we strive for with our pets.
-A standard 6ft leash: All commands will be taught, generalized and proofed initially with a standard leash.
-15ft or 30 ft longline: For those enrolled in an LTD Advanced Obedience course, be ready to work the distance and duration of your cues!
It's best if only the dog's owners are present for the initial consultation and training lessons. If applicable to your pup's individual training plan, family members and/or friends can be worked into your program's curriculum.
Let's Talk Dogs fully understands the demands of parenthood! We also know that sometimes kids need more from parents when they seem distracted. When addressing behavior modification, the first step always starts with controlling the dog's environment as best as possible. Unfortunately, if we were to put children in any one category, it would be the "uncontrolled variable" section. X)
For your Initial Consultation, it's important for your Trainer to observe how your household authentically operates. Kiddos are more than welcome in the initial excitement of introductions and strangers that smell good (to the dog - of course we come bearing treats) is over, kids should be supervised by a non-participating adult in another room, if possible.
For training lessons, as mentioned above, family members and/or friends can be worked into your training program's curriculum, if applicable.
